PRAMESHWARI (IMESH) SUGIRI
Deputy Chief Editor
Seventeen
Indonesia

Confession: I am a magazine freak.

Ever since I could choose what was good to wear and not for my classmate’s 9th birthday, I turned to local kids magazines to imitate kids models featured there. When I grew up, and I began to worry about what lipstick color suit me best, I turned to teen magazines for guidance. Of course, in the end I got more than just fashion.

My interest to teen magazines was drawn deeper when I saw my name written in a famous local teen magazine for the first time! Yes, I started sending my writings to the magazine, and the first article was featured just when I was 13. From that point on, I knew that somehow, I could see myself working in a teen magazine. What’s not to like from working in a fun-filled environment (as seen in those glossy and colorful pages of the magazines?). When I went to college and studied Communication, my dependence on magazine was increasing. It’s not too much to say that every range of magazine was part of my daily staple. I spent hours to linger on each one of their weekly/monthly editions, and never felt like I wasted my time. In fact, those years gave me a training to instinctively tell which magazine is readable or not. And being a reader, I could immediately classify each magazine from the looks of it.

When it came to me to join Seventeen Indonesia, I was just 22 years old (that's about the age of our readers now). But, with a great perseverance and endurance, I have firmly stayed with the magazine for five years now (and counting!). And all these years, I have seen and built together with this beloved team a highly concept teen magazine that manages to bridge diversity in Indonesia. Something you should know about my team: we do not consider ourselves a magazine. You’re probably thinking, “Reality check, freak –you are a magazine!” But what I mean is we’re not just a pile of blah-blah paper that’s sent to you each month. We’re your advisers, we’re your friends, your sister who work for you and spend every single day trying to figure out: “What stuff should Our Girl know about now?” and “How to keep in touch and be with them 24/7?”

So as an editor, there is definitely an expectation for me now to understand how my magazine will extend to other media or even non media, such as events. And whatever to serve the reader, I’d love to get involved! Why, you ask? Because, I believe that my readers have the power to make big things happen. In fact, to me (and to the whole Seventeen Indonesia’s team) they’re already a STAR!
